December 2020 dividend update and year review

Can you believe 2020 is already over?

What a crazy year.

Let’s see what’s shaking.

I keep picking up more BRK.B.

It’s rather expensive right now but so I’m just going to keep banking cash until I see a good entry point.

I am very overweight in Berkshire but I don’t view that as a terrible problem to have. Warren Buffett is even more overweight in this company than I am!

I plan to keep adding more BRK.B and some low dividend ETF’s to my taxable account every month. My dividend increase will remain fairly steady until I get raises from existing companies or until the start of next year when I will have more room in my tax-free accounts.

Let's check out what happened in December 2020

dividend income

For the month of December, I received dividends from 26 different companies.

  • I received $3,371.80 in dividends for December
  • I’m too lazy to find out how much was non-taxable, but it’s most of it.
  • I’m keeping the bulk of my portfolio in lower dividend stock with higher growth (see CN rail) because the tax-free accounts have a very low ceiling for new capital.
  • December is my highest payout month or my “C” column.   A being the middle, B being the garbage, and C straight up G.
  • I won’t increase my lower months just for the sake of it.

Dividend Increase and highlights

I haven’t been following this too closely but I will go through my stocks and do a 2020 raises list. I’ll start below.

  • TFII 12% 🙂
  • AQN 10%
  • AD 7%
  • ALA 4%
  • QSR 4%
  • CPX 6.8%
  • BMY 8.9%
  • OKE 2.6%
  • BIP.UN 7%
  • BAM 12%
  • ENB 3%
  • CU 7%
  • ACO 7%
  • XTC 5.5%
  • WBA 2.2%
  • PRU 10%
  • CCL.B 5.9%
  • CNR 7%

I own several companies that froze their dividends until the Covid goes away. Some companies that I own and am expecting a raise from in 2021 are,

  • CIBC
  • BNS
  • EIF
  • IPL
  • PPL
  • BNS
  • SU
  • IMO
  • CWB
  • EQB
  • MX

I’m only assuming here so, you know…

Nuts and bolts

  • I received $3,371.80 in dividends for December, my best month yet. I was expecting it to be closer to 4g but a few of my ETF’s pulled a fast one on me and moved their payment to Jan. Oh well.

How much free money?

I’ve earned $19,106 in dividends so far this year. Not bad taking 3 months off. I guess I’m averaging above 2 grand a month right now, give or take.

My total income from last year was $17,804. I topped 2019 by $1,302.

Not a terrible thing for how this year went.

It’s crazy to think I earn more per month now than I did for a full year in 2014!

YearTotal Dividends ReceivedTotal Yearly Div Increase
2014$2,421.00$2,421.00
2015$4,169.00$1,748.00
2016$6,192.86$2,023.86
2017$10,760.51$4,567.65
2018$16,223.07$5,462.56
2019$17,804.61$1,581.54
2020$19,106.32$1,302.21
Total$76,677

Since 2014 I have received $76,677 worth of dividends. This does not include any capital appreciation.

what can I buy with all that free money?

It might not be a mansion but at $72,000 I’d have an extra $4,000 to do some reno’s or buy a nice little commuter car.

Not bad for sitting on my but and doing nothing except to patiently collect dividends every month!!

For everyone who has journeyed with me over the last 6 years who knew that this was my goal, thanks for your patience!

Saying that, wait until you see the house I will buy at the end of my next 6 years of dividend growth investing!!!
