Dividend Income – March 2017

Last month I received a dividend income of $557.24 for the month of February. It was a good month in terms of YoY growth and met the expectation of not having a month this year under the $500 mark. February is typically the worst month of the year for my dividend schedule. This should be the last time I ever see a $500 month and I expect March to crush that benchmark.

This year, my goal is to pass $8,000 in total dividends received. Let’s check out March.

March Dividend Income

For the month of March I received dividends from 18 different companies.

I received $850.50 in dividends for the month of March.

This is a new personal record, blowing past my Dec 2016 record of $760. That is an increase of $90 in a measly 3 months.

I can’t wait to go out and spend all this free money. What should I buy with my $850 bucks? Maybe a new…

March dividends
It’s about time!

Nope!

As any reader knows, I prefer to spend my dividends on things that go up in value. I chose to DRIP my dividends.

I know many people don’t like to DRIP and prefer to take cash instead. The reason I like to invest my money through dividend reinvesting is 2 parts.

  1. I don’t pay a transaction fee, which doesn’t seem like much, but they do add up fast.
  2. I get a DRIP discount on new shares below market price, usually by around 3-5%

Blue bars.

My total dividend haul this year is getting very close to my 2014 total year! I’m currently sitting at $2,046.86 and it’s only April 1st. It’s crazy to think that I have already accumulated 95% of my 2014 total in just 3 months! How cool is that.

How Much Free Money?

Year Total Dividends Received
2014 $2,421.00
2015 $4,169.00
2016 $6,193.00
2017 $2,046.86
2018 $0.00
2019 $0.00
2020 $0.00
Total  $14,8299

Since 2014 I have received $14,829 worth of dividends. This does not include any capital appreciation.

Every month I like to see what my dividend income can purchase if I chose to spend it on frivolous stuff. Seeing as my monthly dividend bought me a pair of his and her Apple Watches, I found a couple of nice Rolexes for just over $12,000 and would still have enough left over for a nice holiday.

Rolex Milgauss 116400 and 116400GV.

    1. Good job on your month.

You beat me by $14! Awesome work and great job setting new records. I’m excited to see where we all end up in another 10 years. It looks bright from here.

    1. You hit the nail on the head Troy,

I want my dividends to not only buy a car but a house! One day I would like to spend my dividends on charity (or helping others not a blessed as me) so seeing this number go up really put a smile on my face.

      Cheers

    1. Thanks BHL

I’m lurking around all the FIRE bro sites and it looks like many people are killing it, yourself included!

      Grow baby grow!

  1. Congratulations, Steve! A new record and exceptional year over year growth to boot. You may have to consider renaming your blog to dividollars!

Take care and keep up the good work!

  2. Over $800 is a great month of march for you. I ended up getting over 400 this month too.
I like your idea of putting a material asset to your total dividends received to put things into perspective, very soon you might be getting into the range of mid-size cars 🙂

    1. Thanks Desi,

Last year $400 was a great month for me! It’s amazing how fast the dividends grow, especially when companies raise them 10% (I’m looking at you AQN 🙂

    1. I have several accounts,
I trade Canadian stocks and REITS in my TFSA, US in my RRSP and low paying or non paying dividend stocks in my non registered account.

I also use my wife’s TFSA because the government give us so little room ($5,500 a year per person). It doesn’t make sense to fill up her RRSP because she would not be able to deduct anything.

    1. I most certainly do Tony!

The tfsa is the best thing us Canadians have to get rich. I fill it up as soon as I can every year.

    1. I’m sure you’ll get back to dividend investing.

Keep killing it with the real estate income in the meantime!

    1. I find it surprising how few Canadians top up their TFSA. If they only knew the power it has over the long term…

  3. Awesome month! I agree, Orange is turning into my favorite color this year as well. You can see the great progress over time and you should easily hit your end of the year goals. Looking forward to seeing more records being broken from you soon.

    1. It’s still going to be a tough push to hit my year end goals but the fact so many companies I own have raised their dividends will make reaching my goals much more attainable.

  4. Great job Steve. $850 in dividend income is very impressive. One thing I like is that you track your dividends from year to year. I report on one my annual dividend income is, but don’t really think about tracking my year-to-year growth. I got started blogging last year, so I’m still relatively new to all this, but I think I’m going to start tracking my progress in some fashion, and not just the current state of my income.

Thanks for the inspiration. I’ve seen progress tracked on other blogs too, but somehow, it dawned on me that I need to start doing that after reading your report.

    1. Thanks for the kind words DL,

The DIG and FIRE community are very good peeps. Lots of great places to find inspiration to draw from.

I love building spreadsheets so I track everything from when I started. I post very little of that information – I think people would find it cumbersome or a bit neurotic 🙂

  5. First of all, I love that image at the top of the post. I really enjoy any Wall St. movie. Congrats on a super solid month of passive income. Getting close to $1k in income is a very real figure that can buy a lot of stupidity…. like an iWatch 🙂 Of course, like you, I put my dividends right back to work and reinvest as they come in. When building a passive income portfolio it’s really the best thing to do. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Keith,
I see once again we are neck and neck in our monthly dividend hauls with very similar year over year progress. I had a 41% increase and you had a 42% 🙂 The trick for me is trying to not get burned out at this breakneck pace.

I’m curious to see where we both end up in a decade down the road.

      Cheers

  6. You had me at His and Her Rolex! LOL 🙂

April fools aside, every year, the international committee has to increase by 1 second, so the Rolex still need to be adjusted.

Man, you portfolio has a consistent growth, I can tell by the year end, you’ll hit 4-digits!

I hope my wife doesn’t read this and decide she would like A fancy rolex ~ Lucky for me, she is one frugal woman. I bet if I did buy her one she would ask me to return it!

      1. Your Frugal Wife

You know me well! I would get you to return it! A fancy watch is not nearly as appealing as seeing you reach these amazing goals. Thank you for all your hard work.
        Love you!

    1. Hey Bert,

I was just reading your latest update and I see you’re crushing it as well.

I love how your wife is onboard and even contributing to the ever growing pile of dividends! A great team is hard to beat 🙂

    1. I hope to look back here one day and see the Iwatches I could have bought and didn’t, than compare it to the new house I’m sitting, all with the same money 🙂

The power of compound interest. We shall see.

    1. Thanks MrSLM!

It’s funny you mention that, I secretly push everyone I know to buy products of companies I own! Buy Nike’s sneakers and gas at Suncor 🙂

I get a smile thinking that when a consumer buys a product from a company I own, I get a small piece of that purchase with my dividend.
